Medical Advisor, Bioethics Department, The Hospital for Sick Children
Jonathan Hellmann is a Medical Advisor of the Bioethics Department at The Hospital for Sick Children and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Toronto. He graduated in Medicine in South Africa in 1970, did pediatric training there after which he specialized in Neonatology, completing a fellowship in the US. He is a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa, Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He came to Canada in 1983 and has had a number of positions including Staff Neonatologist, Clinical Director of the NICU, Director of Continuing Education in the Department of Paediatrics and a Royal College of Physicians of Canada examiner in Pediatrics.
He has a long standing interest in Bioethics and served as Chairman of the Bioethics Committee at the Hospital for Sick Children from 1989-1993. He completed the MHSc in Bioethics in 2006 and is currently Course Director of the MSC 3002Y Foundation II course in teaching bioethics.
