Program Description:

The Bioethics Program at University Health Network (UHN) was established in 1997. The program assists patients, family members and health care professionals to resolve complex ethical issue in health care. The UHN Bioethics Program activity is focused in the domains of clinical ethics consultation, organizational ethics consultation and initiatives, education, research and academic activities. Formally educated and trained Bioethicists are based at four UHN sites.

Goal:

Trillium Health Centre

The goal of clinical bioethics at UHN is to continuously improve the management of the ethical dimensions of patient care faced by health care professionals, patients and family members at the University Health Network. This is done via consultation, policy development & review, education and research.

Consultation:

  1. Consultation services are provided to UHN staff, families, and patients regarding ethical issues in patient care (e.g., clinical case consultation),
  2. Bioethics provides support for ethics issues arising at an organizational level, including policy review and development, as well as working with committees and taskforces at UHN, the University of Toronto and, where appropriate, at local, provincial, national and/or international levels.

Education:

Ethics education is provided to UHN staff (e.g., program or discipline specific rounds, discussions, workshops, formal presentations, conferences). The program is also fortunate to have the support of the Harris Family in organizing the annual Philippa Harris Lecture on ethical issues in cancer care.

In addition to its regular teaching within UHN, several of the program’s Bioethicists are engaged in teaching, supervision and committee work at the University of Toronto as appointed faculty and lecturers at the University of Toronto.

Research:

Bioethics undertakes specific research projects in Clinical/Organizational Ethics and disseminates research findings (e.g., by publishing articles/books, presenting at conferences). The research is linked to education needs and ethical issues faced at UHN. The UHN Bioethics Program has internationally recognized research expertise in transplantation ethics.
