JCB Visiting Scholar Profile: Angel Petropanagos

Angel Petropanagos

Name: Angel Petropanagos
Email: Angel.P@Dal.Ca
Visiting From: Halifax/ Toronto (I've come from Novel Tech Ethics, in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. However, I am originally from Toronto and will continue to live here after my JCB visit.)
Period at JCB: April 4-June 24, 2016

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your work history:

In 2013, I completed my Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Western Ontario, with specializations in feminist theory and bioethics. I taught philosophy at Humber College from 2012-2014 and from 2014-2016 I was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Novel Tech Ethics, in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. I am currently a Research Associate at Novel Tech Ethics. I am also the Managing Editor for Impact Ethics (, the co-chair of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society's Ethics and Law Special Interest Group, and the Canadian country representative for Feminist Approaches to Bioethics. Most generally, my research aims to identify and asses the social (normative and structural) barriers that can impede ethical decision-making for health researchers, health care providers, patients, and families. I am especially interested in the ethics of emerging biotechnologies such as fertility preservation, uterine transplantation, and CRISPR gene editing. In addition to my academic work, I regularly contribute policy and guideline development and I enjoy working in the clinical and applied ethics settings.

What will you be doing or working on during your visit to the JCB?

I am working on a project about the ethical challenges that arise in the context of decision making about pediatric fertility preservation. In addition, I am hoping to participate in various JCB activities and initiatives.

What made you want to come to the JCB to do the work?

The JCB has a great group of ethicists and I'm looking forward to getting to know them as I build my career in bioethics.

Is there anything that you're looking forward to doing in Toronto (for example any places you want to visit, or food you want to try)?

I'm just happy to back home with my family and friends. Also, I've really missed the cultural diversity in Toronto (especially the great food), so it's great to be back!

Thanks, Angel! We're very pleased to have you visiting the JCB.
